A shark bite has been reported in Summerland, California.
A 57-year-old female was swimming laps parallel to the beach about 60 feet from shore near Padaro Lane May 1.
Around 2 p.m, she was bumped and bitten by what she believed was a 5- to 6-foot long shark. She identified a black dorsal fin swimming away and back towards deep water.
Once she was back on the beach, authorities were notified while Good Samaritans administered first aid. An American Medical Ambulance was dispatched along with medical staff from the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District.
The woman was taken to Cottage Hospital for treatment of five lacerations to her foot. Photographs of her wound indicate a 7-8 foot juvenile great white was responsible.
The local news agency NoozHawk reports shark warning signs will be placed at Loon Point in Summerland and Santa Claus Lane until Sunday afternoon.
According to the site, a sheriff’s dispatch indicated several other shark sightings, including one at Carpinteria State Park.
Another shark encounter was reported in the state April 30.
A 16-year-old male was surfing off Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, when a shark and stingray began to circle him.
He kicked the aggressive shark and tore his wetsuit and then was injured by the stingray.
Some areas of California are experiencing red tide, which reduces the visibility of the water. This can make it more difficult for sharks to determine what is prey.
Both locations have been marked on the 2020 Shark Attack Map.
